The Problem
November 22nd, 2008 by lo-budge

BIO: The Problem was the first band I was ever in. With Nick having recently acquired an acoustic guitar and introducing me to the Beatles (my parents had a very limited music collection after I was born, so I was deficient in my appreciation of most 60’s and 70’s era music (besides Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Diamond) until becoming friends with my neighbor Nick), we set out writing some very short songs. What makes me laugh the most is that I was the primary lyricist and singer, something I have very rarely done since then. There are definitely some traceable roots in a lot of things I have done in other bands and alone that are evident in these songs. Nick and I spent many years playing in bands in Albuquerque and San Francisco a few years after we did this initial project, and are still good friends today.

Band Members: Sergio Chavez (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion), Nick Campbell (guitar, vocals), and special guests Robin Ritter (guitar), Brandon Richardson (percussion), Travis Nelson (percussion, vocals), Thomas Tomlinson (keyboards)

Years of Operation: 1989

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Song List:

Dead Leaves Blowin’ (Version 1 – featuring Rob Ritter on guitar – and the line “D-Day’s wrath!”)

Dead Leaves Blowin’ (Version 2)

Destruction (featuring Brandon and Travis – I recall Nick being upset with Travis’s laugh at the end, because it sounded like we condoned the act of destruction rather than hated it, being the 14 year old hippies we were)

Everything Sucks (Version 1 – “Everything sucks including you!”)

Everything Sucks (Version 2 – “Travel down to hell- heart’s a -bleedin’!!!”)

Keyboard Jam (I think this is Thomas showing his Casio’s features?  I can’t remember.)

Nick Playing Something

Nick Playing Something Else (apparently working on the solo for “Over The Sea”)

Nick Playing Some Other Song (long guitar parts by Nick, some of which were like “Over the Sea”)

Over The Sea (Take 2)

Over The Sea (Take 3 – slow version)

Over The Sea (Take 4)

Over The Sea (Mistakes)

Over The Sea (The definitive version)

Solve The Problem (Version 1)

Solve The Problem (Version 2)

Three Blind Mice (long intro of some other song)

Walkin’ Down The Street (These are some of the best lyrics ever)

Extra info: I remember these times fondly as being long summer days of listening to Beatles records and annoying Nick’s parents while writing our very earliest songs.  They are a strange mix of aggressive social and environmental progressiveness, which isn’t too far from how I view the world even now.
