Freakazoid Doilies
November 20th, 2008 by lo-budge

BIO: Marty Crandall and I wrote a few joking-around songs together around the time I first bought a bass guitar at age 15, and then a few more after Random broke up three years later. The later songs were under the name of “Scrappy”, but since it was only two songs I’m lumping them in this category.  The name Freakazoid Doilies was a joke that was actually made after most of these songs were recorded, but it’s a better band name than “Marty and I”, so I’m using it here.

Band Members: Sergio Chavez (bass, guitar, vocals, keyboards, drum programming), Marty Crandall (guitars, keyboards, vocals, percussion)

Years of Operation: 1991 – 1993

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Song List:

These songs were recorded in 1991:

Gregory (This is about our good friend Greg Golden.  How his nose turned orange when he ate too many carrots and other escapades.)

High Score (A song about the Nintendo version of Double Dragon – not to be confused with the arcade version, which didn’t have rainbow-colored Abobos.  You can hear me cracking up in the background while trying to play the theme song for most of the beginning.)

Joke Song

Joke Song (Version 2 – it was really necessary)

Mark (S’cute) (This is about Chris Chavez’s then-girlfriend Courtney’s suitor Mark in the 10th grade)

Sheesh (Oh Brother) (This is our homage to Kermit’s catch phrases in “Muppet Babies”)

Cure Riff (I think we thought we nailed The Cure’s sound on this simple little instrumental riff)

TMNT Theme Song (This and “High Score” were our crowning achievements.  You have to see the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in order to catch all the references and quotes in this song.  It’s highly annoying if you have haven’t seen the movie.  We loved that movie.)

These songs were recorded in 1993 (or maybe 1994?) under the name “Scrappy” after Random broke up :

Liability (Marty is playing the sassy flute keyboard and synth drums, and I’m playing the two-note sweet acoustic guitar leads.  I think this song was named “Liability” because we thought it was funny that it was the name of a type of auto insurance.)

Scrappy (Our self-titled instrumental song)

Extra info: Lots of comics that we drew from this era are coming my way from Marty that I will post soon.
