The Out

BIO: The Out (so named because we weren’t in the “In” crowd) was my debut playing bass guitar in a band. We later reformed with the same line-up in the band Random. Starting out in Chris’ garage, then Greg’s garage, and then settling in my garage for the long haul, we taught ourselves how to play our instruments and learned some rudimentary recording techniques thanks to Chris knowing how to put a couple of tape decks together as a make-shift 4-track. Marty barely sang back then, but some of these songs survived and got reworked with vocals in Random. Marty moved to Las Vegas and we didn’t think he’d move back, which made for a difficult break-up.

Band Members: Sergio Chavez (bass), Chris Chavez (drums), Greg Golden (keyboards), Marty Crandall (guitar, keyboards, vocals)

Years of Operation:1991 – 1992

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Song List:

The following songs were recorded in various garages and living rooms on mostly boom boxes and tape recorders and the occasional 4-track.

Our First “Gig” (Chris, Marty, and I played at some 9th grader’s birthday party with a much more competent sort-of heavy metal band we were friends with (called Bedlam, I think).  Here is our effort at getting the party started, with Scott Aaron talking at the beginning.  The song we played is “Song 2”)

Close To Me (by The Cure.  Here’s the original version)

Ice Ice Baby (by Vanilla Ice.  Compare it to the real version.  Which is worse?)

Jokesong Version 1 (After Marty and I recorded this as a duo, The Out made it part of the set list)

Jokesong Version 2 (With Greg’s keyboards – I love the “magic” and “whistle” settings)

Just Like Heaven (By The Cure – take 1 – “slow beginning”)

Just Like Heaven (take 2 – horrible start thanks to me – instrumental version)

Just Like Heaven (take 3 – with keyboards – and, of course, the original version)

Love Will Tear Us Apart (by Joy Division – take 1 – instrumental)

Love Will Tear Us Apart (take 2 – with keyboards – here’s the original)

Mark(s’cute) (Version 1)

Mark(s’cute) (Version 2 – with keyboards)

New Song (this song never had a proper name)

Song 2 (Version 1)

Song 2 (Version 2 – Chris was concerned at the beginning that this was not the correct song)

Song 2 (Version 3 – the “fakestracto” version, as we called it, due to lots of muting leading to an “abstract” sound)

Song 3 (Version 1 – a lack of lyrics led to this horrible naming of songs)

Song 3 (Version 2 – with the exciting addition of “spacey” keyboard effects by Greg)

Space Filler 1 (I used to put together “space fillers” that contained conversations we were having, or song bits that weren’t part of proper recordings, and this one contains a bit of our often-played “Eye of the Tiger”)

Space Filler 2 (This one is mostly Greg hamming it up, and me trying my hand at remixing “Mark(s’cute)” on a cassette tape)

Status (Version 1)

Status (Version 2 – with “Eye of the Tiger” at the beginning)

Status (Version 3 – this is actually the earliest version of this song, and features Chris giving us as much cowbell as he could possibly muster.  Recorded in Chris’ bedroom)

Status (Version 4 – the cleanest version of this song, recorded using Chris’ patented method of putting a couple of tape decks together to work as a 4-track.  To this day, I don’t know how he accomplished this)

Tina Christina

Early vocal attempts by Marty (I remember Marty singing right into the boom box microphone in his room while we recorded this, so we couldn’t hear him (he wasn’t using a PA), but later hearing this.  I’ll try to make this gem appear on both speakers soon, not just the left)

These songs were not by The Out, but were recorded during this time period:

Song with Jason Garduño #1 (This is Jason playing drums and me on bass performing a medley of reggae jams that Jason was teaching me at the time.   I’m including this here since we spent a lot of time with Jason while in The Out and Random.)

Song with Jason Garduño #2 (This is another song with Jason playing guitar that we recorded at his house on his 4-track.  Chris is playing drums and I’m on bass.  We also overdubbed a rain stick during one section.  This is probably the only real reggae song I have ever played on, although Greg and Chris played in a few reggae bands with Jason and Scott Aaron)

Song with Scott Aaron #1 (in my ongoing series of playing pseudo-reggae rhythms laced with rudimentary new wave bass lines while being backed by a reggae guitar player on drums, here is Scott Aaron and I doing some type of jam)

Song with Scott Aaron #2 (in this jam, Scott plays guitar with Chris and I on our favorite cover song, “Just Like Heaven”)

Industrial Status Version 1 (after The Out ended, Greg and I tried our hand at writing a few songs together before Saturday Banned started.  Greg sneezes in this song which causes him to not finish sustaining his chord, which is hilarious)

Industrial Status Version 2
