From Chris:
I sometimes search for tunes on Youtube to give lo-budge a Friday Update. I stumbled on this 70’s French funk track.
There is an amazing organ and strings on this instrumental track. Enjoy the Euroness.
UCB featuring Wale – Pat Your Weave

YouTube – UCB feat. Wale – “Pat Your Weave”.

Kyla tells me that this song is all the rage in DC these days.  When I heard it, I wrote to her “It’s funny for 2 other reasons: That it has a sample of a recent Beyonce song, and that one of the guys lip synchs it.”

This has been one of the most up and down weeks I’ve had in recent memory.  I’ve had good news in some Seattle-related ways, horrible news in others, and things at work and outside of it have been up and down like crazy.

I didn’t have a chance to post yesterday, and things will probably be sketchy on the posting front for me for the next several weeks, but I’ll add an additional video tonight to make up for yesterday.  Kyla and I were talking about The Beatles earlier today and I realized I’ve never posted any of their songs here before.  This one is one of my favorites, among many.

Kyla has been able to see some pretty great musicians at the Tiny Desk concerts at her summer internship.  She saw this band recently, and I had never heard of them.  They are from New Zealand, where she used to live.

The Roots -The Seed

I finally got a new laptop.  I think it has been seven years since I last bought a computer that I am an administrator of, and it is so liberating to be able to put my software on it.

I am still missing a few header images that randomly generate on the top of this page, but I got several more put back today.  I just need to fix the icon that appears on the tab that this page appears on and then things should be back to normal after my recent upgrade of this theme.

Now that I have all of the software I need in one convenient location, I should be able to get more images and audio files added either in the next few days or in a month when I’m in Seattle and can dedicate more time to going through a few old things.

Tony Hayward left BP today.  I’m still keeping that counter up there, though, because several shadowy websites have led me to believe that there is an additional (possibly huge) leak happening that has never been capped, although the one all of the ROVs are showing is still contained.  I hope I’m wrong in that belief (we should know shortly), and if so then I’ll pull it down.

Rush- Closer To The Heart

YouTube – Rush- Closer To The Heart.

From Chris:

Rush was the very first concert I went to! I was in 9th grade at La Cueva High School and I went to see Rush at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque. This was probably 89 or 90. I went with my fifth grade girlfriend, Samantha, and a few of her friends. I didn’t really know any of Samantha’s friends, but I definitely recognized one of them as the school bully from elementary school, whom I used to be very afraid of. I remember in elementary school he had a pretty long mullet, which was a style only the tuff kids could pull off.  When we arrived at Tingley, he told me to stuff a mini bottle of Bacardi down my pants so we could get booze through security, but because I was wearing boxers, the bottle kept sliding down my pant leg. I told him it wasn’t working, so he had to take it, and I think he already had a few mini bottles in his pants.

Anyway, the concert blew my mind. It had green lazers shooting across the audience and a massive inflatable rabbit on the stage. I’m sure that in retrospect we had shitty seats and the venue was lousy, but I was very impressed by the show.
In this live clip of Rush, the band is joined by a member of Barenekkid Ladies, and the guy with the coke bottle glasses is an actor who plays Bubbles on a Canadian TV show called Trailer Park Boys.
Ray Charles – What’d I Say

Happy Birthday to me!

Thank you to Kyla for making my birthday a fun experience today even though she was in DC and could not be here for it.  She directed me around noon to go to Toast and have lunch, which she had pre-purchased for me, which was a nice surprise.

She also asked the daycare to have Simone make a special drawing for me, and they went above and beyond by creating a collage of pictures of her set inside a glitter-lined cut-out of the word “poppa” (since that is what she calls me).  Her hair was full of purple glitter when I picked her up.

Then Kyla had a pizza delivered to my house after I picked up an ice cream cake she ordered for me.

Thank you!  It was a fun treasure hunt birthday.

Guided By Voices – The Official Ironmen Rally Song

YouTube – Guided By Voices – The Official Ironmen Rally Song.

It looks like I’ll be going to see Guided By Voices in Seattle in October with my friend Paul from Vancouver for their reunion tour.  I have seen them many many times, although the last time I saw them was also in Seattle and it was not a very good show.  The guitar player drank so much whiskey that he couldn’t even stand up, and I drank so much beer that I wrecked my bike into a street light, broke my glasses, and walked home with a busted bike and fell down again into a pothole since I couldn’t see as my glasses were demolished.  I also got lost somewhere in Queen Anne and got home at 3:00 AM and went to work the next day feeling like a total train wreck.  So all in all, it was a successful Guided By Voices outing and I hope to repeat all of that again.

Bishop Morocco – Last Year’s Disco Guitars

YouTube – Bishop Morocco – Last Year’s Disco Guitars.

Kyla introduced me to this band recently and I like everything I’ve heard from them so far.  The Robert Smithy guitar effects and parts, the sort of Magnetic Fields vocals, and Simon Gallupy bass tone (and melancholy keyboards) will always be a winning combination for me.

I heard some good news today concerning my future employment in Seattle that has taken the edge off the potty training I’ll be facing again tonight around 8:00 PM.

This is my favorite BP story of the day.

Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street

Time to break out the champagne – the oil spill is contained!

Oh wait.  Much like this song, the victory is bitter-sweet (i.e. is far from over, I’m sorry to say).

I can’t tell you how frustrating potty training is, by the way.  Seriously.  Three cups of water and two hours past bed time led to a victorious potty filled with pee, but only until tomorrow night when the process repeats anew.

UB40 – One In Ten

From Chris:

Back in 1992 or 1993 lo-budge and I went to go see a reggae concert at the Sunshine Theatre in Albuquerque. We were probably around 17 or 18 years old. UB40 was in town and were going to play at the Paolo Soleri amphitheatre in Santa Fe the following evening. A few members from UB40 were at the reggae concert at the Sunshine, and I was very star struck. We somehow ended up backstage with our friend Jason Garduño, who rolled up a massive spliff for the trombonist (Henry Buttons Tenyue) and some of the other members of UB40. Henry asked us if we were going to see their show the following evening, and we said that unfortunately we were not. So he took our names and told us he would put us on the list for free tickets! I was so thrilled. The next day the 3 of us drove to Santa Fe for the show, but rain and a thunderstorm canceled the show! I was so incredibly upset about it. But I’ll never forget it, and it was a total thrill to be a young guy and meet some of the members of the UBs.

From Sergio:

I remember most of this, but I totally forgot about the part of actually being invited to see the show for free and then not being able to actually see it!  I’ll blame that memory loss on the weed.

Also, I updated my WordPress theme just now, and it somehow now doesn’t see some of my banner and header images.  I’ll get this fixed soon.
