Kardinal Offishall, Canada’s hip hop star. Born and raised in Toronto Ontario. His parents are Jamaican immigrants. I like his style because he throws down a bit of dancehall reggae slang and rhythm into his rapping. This video (and song) is a bit slick and over-produced, but I can listen to this song like 5 times in a row and not get sick of it, its so fun to listen to. I like the clip in the video when he swaps out a NY Yankee cap for a Toronto Maple Leafs lid—Canada pride! He also name checks the big BBC Radio hip hop DJs Semtex and Tim Westwood.
Kyla don’t be sad, we can keep rolling Canadian while the Olympix are underway. Did you enjoy watching the Canadian women kill the US women’s team in hockey?

This is what we call a Triple Gold in Olympic speak:

1. It’s a video by Meesoo Lee, friend and most prolific/talented and underappreciated (even by himself) video artist in Canada

2.  It’s a song by friend/plaintive singer and pizza-maker extraordinaire Paul Pittman (and his ex-band Young & Sexy)

3:  It features ice skating, a sport on heavy rotation on the Olympics right now. Featuring American ice skater Nicole Bobek who is currently awaiting judgment on her summer 2009 arrest for alleged meth dealing. She may get 10 years in jail.

Also, could someone in figure skating please ban the following pieces of music:

1.  Anything from Phantom of the Opera

2.  Jazz era songs where the skater then does a faux-Charleston on skates

3.  Bluegrass-style in which you wear fake spandex overalls with one “strap” hanging loose to make it more authentic

Today’s update comes from Nick Campbell:

I first saw Reggie Watts at a variety-type comedy show in a weird bar near downtown Seattle. The other acts were funny, but I was caught off guard by Reggie’s live show.  The only way to describe his perfomances would be completely surreal.  I’d compare him to Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor, people who are at the very edge of comedy and are pushing its limits.  When you see him live you know you are witnessing something special.
I met him a few weeks later after a Pajama Men show.  He couldn’t have been a nicer guy- and not in the “Look at me I’m so charming, cool, and hip” kind of way.  Just genuinely nice,  Talent +humilty = always refreshing (and goes a long way in my book).
Reggie Watts has a lot of videos online, some that demonstrate his musical skills, (which are undeniable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E20YsTsC8Hs&NR=1) and others, like the one above, that are more indicative of his live performances.

I haven’t bought this album yet, but I’m seriously considering it.  If it wasn’t for Conor Oberst’s involvement in it, I probably already would have.  I don’t know anymore why he irritates me so much, but he does.  Yim Yames, on the other hand, can do almost no wrong.

Here’s another band introduced to me by Marty.  The singer has a very good and unique voice.

I got rid of the Maakies RSS feed last week and replaced it with the Comics Curmudgeon feed since the Maakies one never updated.  I’ll figure out something more related to this website to put on that right-side panel at some point.  But for now enjoy the musings of the Comics Curmudgeon, one of the only other blogs I read regularly.

I’m pretty behind on going through some tapes I have meant to listen to, but next time I sit down to do my taxes I’ll put some old crap on in the background and see if anything comes on that I don’t already have on this site.
